On recent trip to Lake Powell with all of my siblings and parents, a challenge arose with my dad where I thought that having a little extra ice in the coolers would be a wise thing whereas my dad wanted just the minimum amount of ice. The thought process behind my argument was that we were going to be camping about 40 minutes away from the marina which equates to 80 miles round trip. The cost of that round trip, if the boat is burning 10 gallons of gas per hour at a cost of $3.50 per gallon on the lake, is about $60 in gas and 80 minutes of time. The cost of an extra 60 pounds of ice was maybe $20.00 and yet my dad did not wish to over burden us with extra ice. A couple of days into the trip we in full fledged ice rationing mode and the stark contrast between myself and my dad was even more evident. Two totally different ways of dealing with ice issues on the lake, but I do love my dad for all of the lessons that he continues to teach me.
